Tonight saw the welcome return of two players we thought we’d lost so things are looking up for getting a full team more often this season.
First roll tonight saw a shaky start which continued shaky and, with the exception of a rather useful 8, finished the same leaving us with a mediocre 53. They responded with an excellent 62 leaving us 11 down.
Second roll started marginally better, picked up the pace mid-roll then mixed fortunes towards the end gave us a fair 56. They came back with a downer of a 49 allowing us to catch up a bit.
Third roll started more promising and continued momentum until Nicky Slowman’s duck, then spluttered to a final, more respectable finish of 59. They hit a 55 letting us take the lead.
Fourth roll started quite well apart from a slight hiccup, then dropped off in the middle but picked up to the end to finish with a cracking 8 and a roll total of 56. They fought back with a respectable 59 giving them a 1 pin advantage going into the last roll.
Fifth roll started promising and kept pace right to the last roll when wanchor man Rowley only managed a 1 pin wonder, finishing with a 57 and a grand total of 281. They countered with a 58, taking the match by 2 pins.
Congratulations are due to Alan for his 34 with no boulters. An excellent score by any standards ![]()
Well it’s a good start when we have a full team so hoping that’s a good sign. The Mariners are a Division 2 side so we’ll need a bit of luck.
First roll started well but rapidly deteriorated as usual, ending up with a 53; they responded with a 59 leaving us 6 down.
Second roll started respectably and once again started to decline starting with young Mr. Porter and a couple of spectacular gutterballs from Dave ‘Radar’ Riella, finishing with a rather poor 50. Their response was a lowly 52 so we’re still in the game!
Third roll had a very poor start, picked up a little mid-roll then dropped off again, picking up with the last two saving a disasterous score and leaving just a poor 51. They came back with a 57, which leaves us 14 behind with 2 rolls to go.
Fourth roll started average, kept momentum for the first half and all the way to a cracking 7, to finish on a very tidy 62. They hit a 62 too so we still need a minor miracle to win this one.
Last roll once again had an average start then picked up mid-roll, stuttering to finish with a decent 63 and a total of 279. Needing 50 to win they hit a 56 beating us by 7 and knocking us out of the cup. Ah well, there’s always next year.
First match of the season and already we’re struggling for players. It seems a few didn’t get the message about the first match!
Anyway, we just about scraped a side with 2 new victims recruitments and a spare and actually won our first game!
To be honest we were lucky. The Nomands had a few bad rolls (our speciality usually) or we would have been well beaten, but in the end we had 3 rolls of over 60, including a very impressive 67, and were the better team on the night.
All in all a good start to the season. Next week, our first cup match, I hope to get photos of the members not included in the gallery as yet. Just watch this space for updates ![]()
In first round of the cup we play home against The Mariners on Monday 11th September.
Today, the day before it all starts, I finally take delivery of the fixture list. This year’s fixtures are therefore now online ![]()
